Default Help to a beginner

Hi everyone,
I am new to wood carving. I have got a bark wood and got new carving tools.I am looking for a simple suitable design (for a 10" long piece) to start. Can someone help? I will really appreciate it.

Hi Rishi, welcome to the group! Look at some of the galleries and that may help you.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I have photographs of my collection of carvings from South Africa. Please see the pictures from the following site:

Picasa Web Albums - sarang.dutt - Carvings

I hope to show my own carvings (hoping to be a good carver some day).

rishi,
One of the most traditional things to do with bark is to do a wood spirit. Before we started seeing the fantasy houses carved in bark, we mostly saw faces--spirits. Pretty much anything you can do in relief can be done in bark.

Good luck.

Thank you, Donna. I will start with the old man's face.
I live in Edmonton (Canada).

I was in South Africa for many years and collected African carvings. You may be able to see their pictures on the following site:

Welcome Rishi,
That is a nice collection you have. I am guessing some of the carvings are teak wood. What are the other woods? Did you attempt to carve while there?

I did a few classes of relief work and made one large carving piece. Unfortunately I do not have a picture of that carving since I gave it as a gift while I was in SA.
Where can I see a demonstration of a simple carving on a bark?

On the left side of the page, under Carving Community, you'll see a line for Carver Image Galleries.
Go there and use the search function for "bark" or "cottonwood".

Thumbs up Re: Help to a beginner

Howdy Rishi; I am new to message boards as a way to communicate but I have been carving for years. I have to tell you that the Home page to Woodcarving Illustrated has a link to patterns for free and also links to many sites that offer patterns for little or no money. What ever you do DON'T GIVE UP!! If you are just starting may I suggest that you pick something that you are interested in and a SIMPLE design is always a good choice at first. God bless you kiddo & keep at it! Also go to YouTube and type in Wood Carving in the search window! There is a wealth of info and how too stuff there.
