Default Hello from Vancouver Island, BC

I have been scrollsawing for about 10 years and was interested in turning to something new. Chip carving caught my eye. I have purchased WB books and knife as well as other tools. I have been at it almost a week and a half and still no Mona Lisa.......might take a while. Anyways, I am enjoying reading these forums about tools and techniques. Many good suggestions and links. Just one observation so far. in a week and a half I have drawn more blood, my own, with a chip carving knife than I did with the scroll saw in 10 years........I must be more careful.
We just had over 3 feet of snow dumped on us in the last week and a half in Qualicum Beach so a good time to stay inside and do a little learning.

Welcome Steve - I see others have read your message but didn't reply - so I will. You have taken the right approach to chip carving - except for the blood drawing, of course. Wayne Barton's books are helpful, and there are many other forms of chip carving. Most books talk about removing each chip with a series of cuts that release it, but I often do part of it and then do some finish cuts. It depends a lot on the wood, size of cuts, etc.

Thank you for your comments, Phil. Your reference to other forms of chip carving has piqued my interest further. Where can I get more information about these other forms of chip carving? If you like, you can pm me with links or book titles, it would be greatly appreciated.

Steve
