Hello carvers, I'm a newly registered carver interested in large format pierced relief panels. I mainly use power tools to do stylized pierced relief pieces but as I'm still drying most of my stock I've only been able to make a few pieces so far. Does anyone know "anything" about vacuum kiln drying slabs? I'm trying to find out more details about this process to speed up the air drying of stock. lots to read, thanks for the Forum cheers, Kevin Morin |

Thanks for the welcome, I've added a few images to an album to show the type of work I'm focused on at this time. If anyone works in larger format slabs, especially live edge slabs, regardless of the species of tree I'd welcome any information they'd care to share. Cheers, Kevin Morin |

I'm new to wood carving and to using a computer, Ive been a carpenter for over 40 years. and now I would like to learn woodcarving. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. So far I bought a set of knifes and gouges and a bandsaw and learned how tosharpen my knifes. learning from a few vedios and a few carving books.I enjoy working with my hand and wood, but this is all new and excitening. I want to learn flat plane carving and caricature carving. I,m 59 years old and a grandfather of 4.

G'day Kevin, welcome to the forum. I think your style of carving is unique and your eagle is superbly crafted. I am a fan of the stylised genre because I like to allow the natural beauty of the timber to take centre stage. I thank you for sharing your originality with us, Joe.

Thanks for the cordial welcome, I'll post another one of the large format pieces that is still not done (!! the story of my work!!) I seem to have minor confusion about making albums versus just uploading pictures?? Does anyone here get their materials green so they have to dry the wood themselves? I don't see a section on wood prep - or drying and storage, is that something most folks just do as their circumstances allow or require? Cheers, Kevin Morin |
