Hello, I'm new to this forum. I found this site in searching for info on doing relief carving and what hardwoods to use. I'm interested in doing relief carving of faces or portraits, perhaps just profiles to start out with. I just returned back to the Minnesota and was inspired to look at carving (and wood working) after several years in Lithuania, where wood carving has long been an art and there are many great examples. Thanks for any advice on duable hard woods for relief carving... maybe using power tools in part. I'm considering a Wecheer tool among others.. JTS |

Greetings JTS, Welcome to the forum. There are so many resources here, and references to books as well from this forum that will help. The woodcarving illustrated magazine has many great tutorial articles on the subject of relief as well. My personal favorite for books is by Richard Butz, called How to Carve Wood. There is a terrific chapter on relief carving as well as other techniques as well. Again, welcome, Thor |
