Have been carving for about three years but still a real novice to this art. No speciality as yet. Just like to keep my hands busy. My projects have mostly used local limbs, such as boxwood, Bradford pear, and even peach limbs. Like to finish up by burnishing with a smooth stone or scrap of hardwood. Riverrat999

Hello and welcome, Riverrat999. This is a great site that will hopefully help you to broaden your exposure to the carving styles. I really envy your access to boxwood, it's my favorite. And pear and peach are nice too. I prefer hardwoods. I would love to see your work if you get a chance to post photos.

Welcome River Rat!... PBR's? PCF's? It doesn't matter what your choice of carving is just as long as you enjoy what you're doing? Some of the guys on this forum are whittler's like myself and then we've got our Master's! It won't take you long to figure out who's who!

Welcome aboard Riverrat999. Nice to hear from another carver who enjoys carving Boxwood. Too bad it is so hard to find any, it is a super wood to carve, hard but worth the effort. Bob

Hi Riverrat and welcome. You're gonna love it here. I grew up in Va. and we had English boxwoods. Is that what you carve? I don't see how, the branches are so skinny. Please enlighten me. |

Hi, Catbird. No, this boxwood is not English box. Do not know type. This limb is only about two inches in diameter, so I carve, or whittle, skinny objects. Small chains, curvelinear abstract pierced objects. I use a stainless steel needle sharpened to a chisel shape to "dig" out the wood in the delicate areas. Tedious but very rewarding. Thanks for the welcome, Catbird. Riverrat999Thank You
