Default Hello from Northern Minnesota

Hi. I joined here yesterday. I hope to learn new things. I've been messing around with woodcarving and scrollsawing since 1998. It's mostly a hobby but I have had most of my stuff disappear as birthday gifts, Christmas gifts and offers of $ too good to refuse. Everybody seems to like my stuff, but I don't think it's all that good really. I have many interests and lots of hobbies, but I like woodcarving because people ask, "How'd you do that?" and it's a good conversation starter. I started with free patterns I found on the net and then branched out into birds and animals. I particularly like natural things like animals and plants; especially vines and leaves. I've carved a few chain link spoons from books I've purchased from Fox Chapel. I've also messed around quite a bit with on and off again magazine subscriptions. Otherwise, I've read some great books from our local library on wood and woodcarving. So, I keep learning. Today I realized that every piece of wood teaches me something, and every piece of wood is different, even if it comes from the same tree. Now I'm trying to design my own spoons and change to a different style of links on my chains for some variety. I'm working on a collection for myself and am determined I'm not going to sell any...well, at least not until I take some pictures of them, for once. Anyway, I've carved maple, basswood, poplar, northern white paper birch, diamond willow, white pine, and elm so far, and some driftwood from the shores of Lake Superior, some of which I don't know what it was. I've decided that overall I like poplar the best and much of it grows right here on the farm I live on so I cut it myself. I think I pretty much have gotten my feet wet in this cut saw and carve stuff so I hope to continue learning and perhaps one day I might actually consider myself a "pretty good" carver. Thanks for reading this, hope I didn't bore you too much.
