Default Hello from new member

Hi,

I just registered on this site. I have been browsing for a few days and decided to join and introduce myself. My name is Greg and I live in Virginia. I have been a woodworker for many years. I do woodworking in my garage workshop. I recently have become interested in carving and have enjoyed reading the forums here.

I am hoping to become proficient enough to be able to use my carving skills to incorporate some carving in my woodworking projects. I am also interested in taking up carving as my work requires that I travel for weeks at a time out of town.

I am wanting to put together a basic carving set to travel with and pick up a good starter book or two.

I look forward to meeting and learning from the members here. This appears to be a very civil forum.

Greg

HI there,
I will recommend my favorite start up book. How to Carve Wood by Richard Butz. His language is simple, he has good patterns for beginning and the immediate gratification of success is there is you try.
You might consider the Flexcut travel set of carving knives for your purposes. I have seen them and they are very cool. That would help you travel light, and many people sing the praises of Flexcut. I don't have those, but would like to have them. I also like the Flexstrop for honing the tools.
Others will have other suggestions I'm sure, and it may come down to accessability and cost for you. I hope you'll post pictures of your wood working projects that you intend on incorporating carving into.
Welcome to the group.
Thor

Greg, Welcome! Yep, this is a good group of folks. I have been here for several years and watched it grow and grow. There is a reason for that! Anyway, as for a travel kit, you didn't say how you plan to travel. If by air, you have a problem unless you feel confident enough to put the tools in your checked luggage...and maybe never see them again! BUT, if you travel by car, the task is much easier. Rick can get you set up with the basics or you might check out www.capeforge.com and check out the mini-set. I own this little jewel and it works great. YOu can buy both knife blades and gouges for the handles and roll them all up into one small package that fits in a coat pocket.

I picked up a 4 peice Pfeil set, a flexcut strop, a couple of books and some peices of basswood today. I leave for a three week trip tomorrow. I am also bringing a coping saw and a couple of blades. I should have pleanty of spare time to destroy the wood and slice up my fingers while I am gone. I should have internet access. I'm sure I will have some questions for the collective here.

Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Greg
