Default Hello from the Monadnock region of NH

Hello all you fellow thumb slicers. It was a joy to find this message board...lot of sharing people; thank you all.

I took up carving about 35 yrs. ago so that I would have something to do at retirement. It was a good choice. My current interest is free-form bowls. I've done two but they were a LOT of work (a black walnut crotch and a maple burl ). The brief time I've been on this site has already given my some helpful ideas ..ie. bowl tutorial.

Anyone have any thoughts on the following?

1. When carving large green stock 18" plus, how do you prevent cracking?

2.Native Americans formed vessels and canoes used hot coals and adzes to hollow. How was cracking prevented in 500 B.B.? (Before Bondo)

Thanks for being there,

Ed
