Christmas of 2007 my grown children got me several books on carving, and a nice set of chisels, I had mentioned that I did a good bit of whittling in my teens, but got tired of the blood shed. By Feb 2008 I had my lap bench finished and my first two dahl horses, and no blood spilt. It was really tough work roughing even basswood with a coping saw, and could see I needed a stronger bench and holding system for larger pieces. I Finished my first workbench two weeks ago ( a Norm Abrams style but made all of locally harvested red elm, white oak, and an Ipe tailstock (Ipe is not local). Nearly done with a Euro style carving Platform (seen in Chris Pye's book Elements of Wood Carving). I have been practicing with my tools and sharpening them. Projects look like what is in the books, for original work I have a sketch book nearly full of critters and faces, and four projects roughed out. I have enjoyed looking at some of the projects shown here, and thought I should say Hi.

Welcome to the group. I noticed you used some IPE wood. How did you cut it? I have a source to get it free, thought I might use it to make some spoons but I know it is very hard and wondered if I could cut it with my bandsaw? Cliff |
