Thumbs up Hello everyone :)

Hi, I'm known as Donny and I am from Northampton, England. For the past few weeks I've wanted to start a new hobby, or do something different and challenging. My first idea was to take a long walking trip, I even thought about walking the whole coastline of Britain...but well, that takes alot of planning!
In my planning I thought that I'd maybe need some bushcraft skills so I joined a popular uk bushcraft forum. I learnt some very interesting things, but there was one forum on there which caught my eye, which was "DIY & traditional crafts". Here, people discuss making tools and other things out of wood and so on. Alot of spoons and knife handles appear there. This really interested me and I decided to search for a wood carving forum...and here I am!

I've browsed the site for a few days and I really like all your work. I'm going to try wood carving myself, and I'm sure I'll find enough help here.

I like drawing, DIY, photoshop designing...I also play the piano, guitar, and I produce electronic music with a friend, just as a hobby...so I'm quite creative, and wood carving is my next hobby!

That'll do i think...

Welcome aboard Donny. Carving is a great. I admire your goal of walking around the coast of Britain, that would be a great way to see the country. I always wanted to sail the coast of England, but perhaps walking would be even better. Good to hear you are learning some bushcraft skills, you will find they come in very handy. In North America here, many men hunt, and have learned many of those skills during their lives or from their fathers/relatives/friends who taught them to hunt, so we take them for granted.

Bob

Alright Donny, I like your thought process!

I started carving after offering to make my son a pirate ship...then decided he would need a figurehead, then saw the price of a carved figurehead...

Try and find some soft wood to start with, supplies in the UK aren't easy to come by other than European Lime, which is a bit harder than Northern Basswood (which I eventually ordered from the US).

Pete

PS he is still waiting for the figurehead.
