Default Hello from the dust bowl

Just wanted to drop in and say hello to everyone. I won't tell you I am new to carving. I will tell you I have yet to begin to carve. Been reading these forums for along time now. Trying to convince myself this is something I can do. I will tell you I have no artistic ability whats so ever, so this may not be my niche in life. However I am willing to try until I am told other wise or just see it isn't going to happen for me.

As far as joining any clubs or getting with other carvers to watch and learn, that is a problem. I don't know any and have no clue if any are even in this area. I do see there are several folks here up in Kansas that carve and being how I am only 15 minutes from the state line in Oklahoma I may see if I can con someone into letting me come up and meet them and have them show me the way to success. Not trying to bum a ride here, just wanting to learn.

Well thanks for reading and I am off to bed. 12 hour shift work without your forums would creep on by.

Not knowing what part of Oklahoma you live in if you're in my area around Grove you're more than welcome to stop in for a visit. I invite you to visit my Blog for pointers on caricature carving and if you need any additional help just ask.

Welcome cow chaser to the forum , there is a saying that my dad told me years ago that goes ( all wood carvers wood be wood carvers if they would carve wood ) which means practice practice practice.
ther is lots of help on some sites here on the forum that are great totourials sp? on how to get started with the proper cut ,how to hold the knife etc. The only advice I can give you at this time is to have some crazy glue on hand to put the skin back in the position it was before you rearranged it on your finger or thumb. As for carving clubs or carver in your area , if you tell us what area you are in ,some one should be able to give you a club or woodcarver that is close to you. worth a try.
glad you jioned . Al

cowchaser,

hello and welcome to the board. not sure how far you are from elk city but phil and vicki bishop are there and offer classes. they are 2 of the finest caricature carvers around they also have a class in elk city every year that is real good, but then again any class with them is good, their website is www.bishopwoodcarving.com look them up they also have an excellent array of roughouts.

Greetings Cowchaser....

Great screen name!!!

The chances are that the majority of the carvers that are on this forum started out just the way you are and if anyone ever told me that I had artistic ability I'd ask them to share some of that weed that they were smoking. I have little or no artistic ability...nada...zilch...zero... but that doesn't stop me from having fun and every once in awhile I even get lucky and folks can actually recognize what I've carved.

With that said I'd recommend that you check our the Little Shaver's Web site at the following links:

http://www.littleshavers.com/BegKit.html plus http://www.littleshavers.com/All_Books/20123Text.jpg

or

Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers at the following link:

http://www.woodcarvers.com/begkit.htm

You're not going to know what you can or can not do until you give it a try! Both beginning kits are an inexpensive way to get your feet wet! This is the way I started.
