Hello everyone; I ran across this site while looking for woodspirit info. I have been doing some crude work while camping with walking sticks and whittling has kind of caught my interests. I am wanting to learn more. I was wondering if any of you could direct me to a couple of hand gouges I may need. I have a couple of good knives but don't know if I need a set of gouges or a couple of them to start? This site will be a wonderful resource! thank you mike |

There will be a lot of folks chime in on this, In my opinion you should'nt buy sets get the tools you will use, in sets you will find you only use 2 or 3 of the tools and the rest just look pretty. Welcome to the forum. Larry |

I agree buy what u need when you need it. I bought my 1st set and didn't (still don't) use 3 of the 6 pcs set. i now have many gouges v tools and knives however they were purchased as my experiance and needs grew...as yours will as well..Welcome to the forum...and as far as your question I'd start with a 1/4 #9 gouge and a 1/4 v tool to start with just my preferance. But be smart buy the best tools you can afford... there is ne sence in buying a cheap tool that will discurage your new found hobby.. and please buy a good glove... Be safe and have fun

Hi Mike...welcome to the WCI Forum. Always fun to have another carver join the forum - great place to visit and enjoy. You asked about what type of other tools to purchase to help you carve...my suggestion would be to join a local carving group and see what they're using and maybe borrow some of their tools to see what you might like... As some of the other members have already mentioned, I don't suggest buying a carving set as you'll probably rarely use many of them...spend you hard earned money on good tools that you need and will use for your specific type of carvings... try and then buy! In the meantime, welcome to the forum and safe caring to you! Kenn
