Hello Fellow Carvers, I have been hobby carving on and off for probably 16 years. I have dabbled in flat plane (Harly Refsal), in the round carricature and wildlife/scenic reliefs. Most of my carvings have been given away as gifts so I have little to showcase on my mantle. I did actually find one of my own Santa carvings in a local craft boutique and subsiquently bought it back for $5 US. I'm keeping him. Ok, now for confession: I'm not much for discussion forums and have a hard time faithfully participating. My real motivation for joining the forum is because members get first stab at the Fox Chappel / Allen's Attic discount sale and I really want to get some books on the cheap. Now, that said, I seek repentance and will try to actively participate in this forum. Please forgive me for my selfishness. Humbly yours, The Undercover Carver |

That was an entertaining intro for sure. I once bought back a carved box that I saw in a merchant's booth at a medieval event. They won it in a raffle that I donated it for, and had no use for it. I then sold it to someone who wanted it. All carvings deserve only the best homes. Welcome, and I hope you feel at home here shortly. Christina |

Thank you for the kind reply. I already feel at home. My Santa story is indeed very similar. It was donated to a Polynesian dance studio for their Christmas fundraiser. I think Santa is misunderstood in Polynesia. Next time, he gets flip flops and an Aloha shirt. I remember vistiting your web page once when I was researching designs for "plank chairs" or "bog chairs" or "African chief chairs" as they are sometimes called. Interestingly, there are many examples on the web but not much information as to the dimensions of the planks and types of wood used. Your Horse Head with Celtic Knotwork chair was one of my favorite examples as I own a couple horses. I wonder, would you be willing to share the dimensions of the lumber you chose for your chair and the position of the seat mortise? Don't worry, I wont steal your carving design, I have some other themes in mind for my chairs. Regards, The Undercover Carver |

Undercover, The dimensions I used are from William's web pages. I know him from medieval reenactment events. http://tech.cls.utk.edu/wood/project...hairplans2.jpg He doesn't mind at all that folks use his plans. The wood I used was yellow pine from the big box stores. DON'T use it if you intend to carve it by hand. I seriously dislike yellow pine. It would be worth finding white pine or oak or even gluing up something to get the thickness and strength needed. Thanks for the comments. The chairs are here in my studio and folks try to buy them over and over, but I won't sell them. I guess I should do some more. Christina |
