| Hello, all fellow carvers; I'm glad I found this site. From what I see on the forums, I'm going to learn a lot here. I've had an interest in wood carving for many years, but, just now got around to trying it out for myself. I am eager to do my first piece but I think for safety sake, I should get a few things first 1.) A good book...(or 2 or 3)...for beginners power carving....I'm very interested in primarily carving tree spirits first, & animals, after I've gotten a few carvings under my dremel belt.Happy 2.) A good brand of safety gloves....because I KNOW ME, I can be a clutz!!! 3.)A good method for dust removal 4.) I'm guessing I'll be needing some sort of clamping method ANY advice that anybody here is willing to offer about power carving, I will be happy to take. If anyone can recommend where to look, or, can recommend any of the above, I would be very thankful. This community of carvers seems to be a friendly bunch of very knowledgable people & I'm very eager to learn the hobby of power carving. Thank you, in advance for ANY time you take to respond to this post. Have a great day! ![]() gumbyteeth04Happy |

Hello and welcome, I see your interested in tree spirits...however, you wish to use power. If you decide to try carving tools and a mallet, I'll be glad to share what I have learned over my short time carving. I also noticed from your profile, you enjoy kayaking...well, we both have two things in common now as I'm an avid seakayaker. Hope you enjoy the message board. Patrick |

Hi and welcome to the board. I agree the first thing is a couple of books and if you can find a carving club....even better. But when you say power carving and carving glove in the same paragraph....my fingers start to hurt. When I started 1 1/2 years ago I tried power carving and since I was safety minded.....I wore my carving glove!!!! Big mistake. That typhoon burr picked up a thread on the glove and almost ripped my finger off before I knew what happened. So read first....then carve. |

Gumby... I went through this exact same discussion about 8-months ago because I use to wear a carving glove with my Dremel. Joy's right! Don't wear a carving glove while power carving. If and only if, you feel that you absolutely have to have a glove on your spare hand, wear a smooth leather work glove that will lessen the chance of the burr snagging the glove. However, your best and safest bet is either to hold on to your wood away from where you are carving or utilize that clamping device you were talking about.

Take a good look at the power carving forum. Also if you are interested e-mail me or send a private message with your e-mail address and I'll send you my tutorial on Power Carving a Cypress knee Santa for beginners. It can be adapted to a tree spirit, same principle. Doug |

Don't wear a glove and power carve, learned the hard way like everyone else! If you are hand carving try the Whizard II Kevlar glove that many of the sites offer. For power carivng I use a Foredom unit 1/6 hp. Like others said there are other threads on this already so try some searches, you will find a wealth of information. Greg..... Oh ya, welcome :>) |
