Default Hello, all

I am pleased to make your acquaintances. I have lurked here for only a little bit, but this sounds like a community I would like to be part of.

I have a rather extensive woodworking background and once even started to take a carving class. I had to drop it because I also taught (woodworking) at that school and I was asked to take over another class in the same time slot. So I have a few carving chisels and one almost finished shell to my name. That was more years ago that I care to remember!

I am also known as 'the Router Lady' and have a book out on that topic. I'd be more than happy to address general woodworking questions. But that is not the reason I have registered here.

I am back in school, this time as a student. It is actually a seminary in Dubuque, IA and I am working on a master's in divinity. It is something my heart told me I needed to do. I love it here but.....

All my woodworking tools are in storage in Arizona (where I live). The only thing I have room for here are my carving chisels. I have them here along with my sharpening tool box. I decided that now is the time to rekindle this interest. I need something to do with my hands that balances all the book learning time.

So you all can help me out with sources, resources, and advise. First off, is there a woodcarving club within reasonable driving distance of Dubuque? I value and appreciate hands on mentors.

All for now. Thanks for allowing me to be part of this.

Welcome aboard Carol. Glad to hear you have some woodworking experience, we may pick your brain a bit on that subject. There are some great carvers here, and even greater human beings! Ask any question that you may have, you are sure to get a response or ten. What kind of carving are you doing? Or have you settled on one yet? Good luck with your studies and have fun with your carving.

Bob

I live a long way from Arizona and its a little colder here so Hi Ho is the best to advise you on the carving clubs. I just want to welcome you and sounds like you could maybe give us some pointers. At any rate welcome aboard and we are happy to have you as part of our family

To answer an couple of questions and make a comment or two.

My home is in Strawberry, AZ, the other side of the state, Hi Ho, from Kingman. I am currently in Dubuque, IA for school.

Oh, would that I could post pictures of my work, but I am such a newbie that all I could take of picture of now would be my tool roll!

I had asked about woodcarving clubs within driving distance of Dubuque, IA and am still awaiting a response.

A computer search turned up one in Rochester, MN, a little more that 3 hours away! The good news is that they meet on Saturdays, a day I have some time, so I am considering making the drive. I did check the Senior Centers around here with no luck. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for your welcome.

Carol,

Are you at Sinsinawa?

You might check the Dubuque Art Center, they may have info on the community events regarding wood working or wood carving.

Additionally you might check

Woodcarvers of the Tri-States: 582-6391.

I do not know if that is an IA or IL area code. The people there are horrible about giving 7 digit phone numbers.

When I lived near there you only had to dial 4 numbers.
