Hello Larry,
Welcome to the WCI Board. You'll find lots of good people here with lots in common--both woodcarving and what you do in real life! Good folks with lots of help for beginners and experienced carvers, too.

Come back often and ask about anything you want to know. WHen time allows, surf back through old postings--there's lots of good stuff in them--and you can search by topic.

Hi Larry and welcome. Like Bart said 'you've come to the right place.' We have so many wonderful carvers and woodburner's on this message board.
What type of carving are you interested in learning about?
Kathy

Hi Kathy,
In my wildest dreams, I would love to learn how to carve caricatures.

For now, I am looking for the simplest patterns/instructions available. Several years ago, I did purchase online a wood spirit carving guide (progressive images arranged on a sort of totem pole)...

I have laid in a fine supply of bandaids and arranged for trash bin priviledges at a fine local wood furniture and cabinet maker.

I am browsing the old posts, here, trying to soak up everything I can. Great site. Larry

Hello again Larry,
First, get a carving glove for the hand that holds the wood you're carving. Then look for a good piece of northern grown basswood on which to start learning to carve--it's much easier to start with basswood than pine, oak, walnut, etc. Then suscribe to Wood Carving Illustrated. Each issue has carving projects with degrees of difficulty from beginner to advanced--many of which include patterns and step-by-step how-to instructions.

If I remember right, you're somewhat close to the Columbus area--Richard Belcher has a full-service carving supply there--and he teaches carving classes, too. There's probably lots more, but I know he has tools, books, wood, cutouts, etc.

With Christmas break coming up, that should give you extra time to try out newly acquired carving tools and wood.
