Don't get over confident there Bruce. Congratulations on your safe carving, but keep your bandaids close, because it will happen at some point. Super glue works pretty good too on some cuts.
You've chosen a great hobby, and can look forward to a lot of hours of carving fun, and a great bunch of people. Find a local group to even make it better.

Carve safe, Tom

bruce,
we can all laugh about getting cut.....but ..it can be very serious....maybe lose a finger ...loose feeling in hand....like one author said in his carving book almost lost his life because of infection........wear a carving glove ...hard to get use to at first.....boy saves a lot of pain...now I can't carve without one.....don't want to......you can still get cut............but believe it won't be as serious as without a glove.

be safe
Jim

Welcome Bruce! This is a great place to learn and grow in this great hobby.

Please take Jim's advise, and make a glove and thumb guard the first tools you pick up when you start to carve.

Hi, Bruce, welcome to the forum. Cutting a finger is inevitable. Even with a carving glove on your holding hand and a thumb guard on your cutting hand. The glove (a kevlar glove) will save you from slicing your hand, but does not guard against stabbing wounds. Always keep your fingers out of the path of the blade. If you have to use a lot of pressure to make a cut, you don't want to make that cut.

Enjoy yourself and be safe.

Ed
