High. I'm new to carving, not counting woodworking class in high school oh so many years ago, and was hoping for some pointers. i'm thinking of starting off with chip carving and then working my way up to carving figures. My wife likes to decorate in nature themes and wants to get me a scroll saw. I live in an apartment and that may be a little more noisy than my neighbors would care for. Any tips in technique and tool selection would be greatly appriated. |

If you spend a little more money and get a good scrollsaw, your neighbors won't even know you are using it! I have a DeWalt that I got a great price on thru www.toolking.com a factory reconditioned with light and stand....of course you can spend up to a couple of thousand like for an excalibur etc .. as for chip carving....lots of good chip knives out there....you only need two, a chip carving knife and a stab knife. and I recommend Wayne Bartons book "Chip Carving techniques and Patterns" to start....do just what he says no matter how awkward it feels and pretty soon you will be comfortable with it......imho OHHHH forgot........welcome ha ha

Welcome aboard Shadojack, as Hi Ho mentions, a good quality scrollsaw is pretty quiet, not like the old ones use to be. I have a Dremel and I'm happy with it, but there are much better machines out there. Bob

Thanks for the tips and the welcome. Hi Ho I noticed on your site you also play the Mountain Dulcimer. My wife and I just started lessons on the Hammered. Glad to know there are a few of us out there. |

Welcome, as you can see we have some real helpful folks here. Oh and they can even carve, paint and burn too. I'm very new to carving myself, but I can tell you there will always be one more tool you'll need/want. Kathy

Wow. Just looking at some of these pieces of artwork make me green with envy. It will be sometime before I'm even confident enough to place a picture on this sight. I'm sure I will have plenty of Head Bange days ahead of me. |
