thanks lee,and the wood is Huon Pine,a unique wood found only in tasmania here,very soft to hard wood depending on the cut,light yellow to rich golden,has natural oils in it which makes it impervious to woodworm and retards rot to a surprising degree,it is documented here that all Huon here is well over 2000 yrs old,sadly near extinction with only minute pockets left,the wood that I use and others use is what is salvaged from the flooded valleys of the hydro electric system of huge dams here in tasmania's rugged sth west coast.

yes been carving for 21 yrs now,that ship was my first attempt at playing with wood,my 1st carving,won 1st prize in my 1st art contest,so i kept it up,now i have over 750 assorted carvings here in au and around the globe,ranging from a 2 inch angel,to a 10 ft relief carving,and having my work honoured in our history books here,as my work is in The Huon Pine Story,first concise pictoral and written history of Huon Pine.
