Default Greeting From South Dakota

Hi everyone, I'm Darrell. I only have 2 years of carving under my belt. But am very pleased with my progress. I'm interested mostly in relief, and have been using poster-size glued together White Pine and the resent one was in Aspen. Is there better wood that I should be using?

Hi Darrell,

Let me be the first to welcome you to the board. I live down in Yankton. I'm sure you will get some good advice here. As far as wood goes I've only done two reliefs and they were both in basswood. I think wood, like tools, are just a matter of preference. I suggest just go ahead and try different woods and see what you prefer. Basswood may be one of the most popular to carve, but it can be a challenge in staining unless you plan on painting it. Good luck with what you discover and please post some pictures of your relief carvings when you get a chance.

Hello & Welcome, I too have been carving for two years and isn't it a wonderful hobby or calling. I like basswood, it doesn't have a lot of grain and lends itself well to knife and gouges. Have you seen the Chipcarving & Relief Forum? You can pick-up some good information and see how others carve in relief.
