Hi there, My real first name is Alex, but because my last name is totally impossible for English people to pronounce, I use often the alias Alec Gold. And an alias never hurts on the internet. I'm very new to woodcarving, but look to it as a way of expressing and relaxing myself. When I can get a day or even two of I like to go kayaking, there are a lot of wetlands, rivers, creecks and streams around my place, so there is more than enough space for that. It is just the time that is scarce and it is hard to be able to go for a full day. The kayak is a folding one, a German build Klepper, made in 1988 and still going strong, all original except one aluminium part that I recently replaced with an original one! Woodcarving would be a new hobby to me. How I come to it? Often I take a walk through woods or parks and see some wood, nice, old, worn, warm. Often with spooky and fairytale shapes and I often would like to work that wood, make something nice out of it and in the same process release some of my stresses that one gets from a days work. And it might be a healthier release than smoking or drinking. And I recently bought two pfeil chisels in a garage sale for 50 cents. Both. It's an 8L/7 and a 7L/25 and that was the trigger. I need to do something with them, I need to learn something. Well, if I can avoid the cuts and slashes and that is why I'm here! A place to learn and share. |

Thanks Wayne! Currently I'm reading in the tutorials. And about the best tools to get. What to get started with. A knife (I need to buy it) some chisels, a mallet, what wood, kevlar glove (got some but I don't think the are stab-proof). It's exciting, it's new and I think I'm going to love it! |

Thank you for all the warm welcomes! It is just that which I fear most! What can I achieve? If I look at all these nice things?! Your bird house from cedar?! wow!!!! But I'll start simple, buy a knife and some basic stuff from good quality, learn to sharpen these tools (I can sharpen an outdoor knife pretty good, it's just all those rounded tools that I wonder about) and start making the 5(0) minutes wizards. Pity Christmas is over, otherwise I could start making nice Santa's |
