Michelle.....look up "scary sharp" on google...great way to start learning how to sharpen....and cheap! You can always go to power etc after you learn how.

Hi Michelloh,
Welcome to the club.Get to the carving with Ricks tools And get the feel of it. You have time to worry about learning to sharpen.Click on this site of an article by Joel Hull and it will help you with carving stick people.Lots of luck.

Good luck with your new hobby. I love to carve but don't get to do it as much as I would like. I have only a few suggestions. Buy the best tools you can and remember that you don't really need all that many. If you can find one, an old stone for straight razors is a fine stone to have. I have three or four that I have picked up at antique stores. They work really well and usually cost less then $10.00. Follow this up with a leather strop and you can shave with your tools. Lastly have someone show you how the first time. It reduces frustation.
Take care
Dan

Welcome to the board. And to the world of carving. Don't rule out carving while watching your game on Sunday, I use a lap tray to carve when I watch TV. Little Shavers kits are great, and really sharp, so you will be up and running right out of the box. The board here is a great place to learn , so ask any questions you might have.

Bob
