Default Definitely Wood - John

Greetings,
I have been collecting/reading Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine for some time now and enjoy the variety of articles. I also subscribe to Wildfowl Carving Magazine as my interests have mainly been in carving song birds, shore birds and various styles of ducks all with a Foredom rotary shaft tool. My interests are changing a bit and I want to get into carving using handtools to reduce the dust and noise produced by machines. My first hand tool project may be a walking stick or cane following a pattern book by Frank Russell. I am also interested in pyrography and relief carving. Somewhere down the line I would like to carve a sign for my carving business, Definitely Wood, to display over my table at our annual decoy festival. I belong to a carving guild, Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild, in eastern North Carolina.
I would be interested in any ideas for the cane or walking stick, sign, etc.
Thanks,
John

Welcome John, there are a lot of very gifted carvers on here (unfotunately I'm not one of them) and each and every one of them are willing to offer hints tips and advice on carving. If you check the members galleries you will see a host of walking sticks and canes to view. That is also my main interest altho, I have temporarily had a set back due to surgery so I am restricted to smaller carvings, but having fun all the same. Once again, Welcome Aboard
Cliff

Well John, if you want to go into edged tool carving, it is quiet and very satisfying. I use both, power and edged tools, and ofter in combination, but every so often I'll go edged tool alone.

There are no limits on what you can carve on canes, staffs, walking sticks, just go crazy and use your immagination. See what you can come up with.

A sign is a different matter, it has to catch the eye of a customer, yet show exactly what you are and perhaps what you carve. You can do humor in it, simple lettering, carcarature, or incorporate a bit of everything. We'll be looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Bob
