Welcome aboard. you'll find a lot of information if you read this forum. Being a novice too, I know I have. However if you join in the conversation you'll also start to build friendships.

Welcome
Doug

Greetings Derek and welcome to the forum. Everyone here was a novice once. It sure helps to be able to watch someone carve in person, to see what they are trying to tell you first hand. But when that isn't possible, DVDs are available and we on the forum are always glad to try to help.

Another member of the forum, Aulddiy, is in Scotland also. He will have some insight for you about ordering supplies and tools. The biggest thing about carving is that once you learn how to use your tools and learn the basics of shaping the wood with them, you can take it from there. Your only limitations will be the ones you place on yourself. Welcome and best wishes. We can't wait to see what you do.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
I found that a great way to start here is to browse the archive first and the decide on the type of carving you want to exp. with and then focus on carving.
Good luck .

Derek, This is a great site and you're already got a good start.
I would probably start with whittling as opposed to gouge and mallet work. Which ever way you go learn to sharpen your knives/ gouges first.
Get thee to a library! Good luck, Greg
