Where can I find basswood about 4 feet long with a cross section of about 8 inches by 8 inches? Want to carve a great blue heron.

Welcome to the forum. Your best bet for basswood like that would be Heinecke Wood Products

You might save quite a lot by building up the carving blank from multiple pieces of basswood. The body of your proposed Great Blue Heron may be 8" x 8", but the legs, neck, etc. will be smaller. Depending on the pose, it may require gluing together parts before carving.
