Carved 2-300 decoys ? ... Quite an impressive portfolio ... I would love to see your collection .. Iam a old duck and goose hunter from way back living down here in southeast texas ... Still have a old decoy of my father's made from paper mache .. Those days are gone now .. but loved those memories ..
Glad to have you on board and just join in anytime ..
Curious though .. What made you so interested in collecting decoys ?

Thumbs up Re: Carving-N-Collecting ---Rare Decoys

Hi.....started hunting decoys when i was 12 ,used my grandfathers 10 Gauge Double barrel Parker shotgun. He used to carve decoys, never thought much about collecting decoys then.Back in 1990 started to carve -first place i stopped to sell my own, things were a bit slow for him,so he wanted to trade me old ones for mine. When i started to go over his collection he had for sale,my Grandfathers were their, along with a couple of uncles who used to carve many years ago.We ended up making a trade-plus he gave me $100 for gas.Was laid off at the time-$100 bucks was a lot of money back then.Since then have built a decent collection of old ones. Most of mine are in other people collections.Have 3 from the early years.Have an Eider Drake in process of finishing-life size, should be done by end of April-or sooner. Will post it here on board. Have a good day.

Welcome to the WCI Message Board,Many of us would like to have a few special old carvings around, but don't really know which ones are the good ones and which ones aren't. Sounds like you've not only learned how to do that, but are working on carving some that will be in other folks' collections, too. There are several folks on this board who do some collecting, too. When you get a chance, post a photo of either your own creations--and/or some from your prized collection. Donna T

I have several decoys that I bought unfinished many years ago at the Duck Decoy factory in Oak Hall, VA on the Delmarva Peninsula. One is a Mallard, another is a goose and another is a Merganser.

An interesting coincidence! I was at a clinic yesterday, for routine tests, and picked up a copy of "Field and Stream" (most recent I think). Thumbing through, I ran across pictures of decoys; and, it turned out to be information on the sale of some late-19th century decoys. Simply amazing! There were 3-4 of them the cheapest cost $6 figures and the most expensive went for over $1/2 million.

I remember fishing old wooden decoys from the swamps during my waterfowl hunting days. Took some home and left them around the house for years. All are gone with no idea what happened to them. Doubt any of them were very valuable; but, sure wish I had them to add to my carving collection.

Field-n-Stream is a great magazine, have bought numerous copies over the years. They always seem to have interesting topics.Decoys-have taken a steady rise in Price ,doubling in prices every 2-3 years. On east coast here-they range from $500-to-$500,000.Other parts of North America-have seen them go high as $900,000.Havent got the latest issue of Decoy Magazine-(out middle of May). But Last auction of Guyettes in Maine -April 26-27...2007,they expected to break $1,000,000 mark for a single decoy.Since Sothebys-n-Christies of New York got involved 5-6 years ago,Decoys have soared...........Been some interest in Collection up for auction.....290 people have looked at it-with 4 days left. Not every body wants a Major collection, but its a great way to add 50 to your existing collection, and still get your money back. Its been a great hobby.
