Default The Big Kauhana

Hi all:

THIS IS MY FIRST POST AND I HAVE MUCH TO LEARN; ABOUT CARVING AND
USING THIS WEB SITE.

I HAVE BEEN CARVING IN-THE-ROUND, RELIEF CARVING, POWER CARVING, AND WOOD-BURNING FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS NOW. I HAVE EVEN TAUGHT A FEW CLASSES ON WOOD-BURNING (MY "EXPERTISE").

I HAVE DONE WELL WITH MOST OTHER AREAS OF CARVING ALSO AND AM NOW PLANNING TO ATTEMPT MY FIRST CHAINSAW CARVING (OF A VIKING)
I REALLY NEED MORE INFO FIRST: BEST KIND OF WOOD? FRESH CUT OR DRIED (FOR YEARS?).... PAINT ENDS TO PREVENT CRACKING? AND OF COURSE HOW TO TREAT TO PRESERVE THE WOOD?

IF ANYONE HAS THIS KIND OF "EXPERTISE" I WOULD APPRECIATE A REPLY
(NOT SURE IF I SHOULD GIVE MY E.M. ADDRESS HERE??) OR WILL CHECK BACK REGULARLY TO SEE IF I CAN FIND IT IN THE FORUM.

MUST GO NOW AS I HAVE WORK TO DO OUTSIDE.

HAVE BEEN A PAST SUBSCRIBER TO WOODCARVING ILLUSTRATED (THE BEST
CARVING MAG. I HAVE FOUND). AND CONTINUE TO PURCHASE MAG'S FROM
FOX CHAPEL AS NEEDED. JUST PURCHASED A CHAINSAW CARVING MAG. WHICH HAD MANY GOOD PICS, BUT WAY TOO MUCH INFO ON SAWS, ETC., AND VERY LITTLE INFO ON "HOW TO".... ANY SUGGESTIONS?

BYE FOR NOW.

Hello and welcome, Big K,
This message board actually has a section on chainsaw carving. You'll find several of our regular posters are quite good at the art of chainsaw carving.
Good Luck at finding the info you need here.

Hi Big Kauhana and welcome to our 'crayzee carvin' family. Definitely check out Donna T's suggestion. Just go to WCI Message Board and scroll down until you find the forum heading for Chainsaw Carving and click on that; read the threads and comments posted or start your own thread to ask a specific question. Lots of friendly folks to help and answer your questions. Also if you go the Forum on the Beginner's guide to using the messanger board it has very helpful info to help you around the site.
Good luck and enjoy the journey.

Leslie
