There are a few sites that give suggestions. You can find links in some of the threads already posted in this site. However this site has a bonus.....you can ask questions and get feedback! Check the beginner forum and look at some of the threads relating to what you are interested in. Remember to scroll all the way down when you find a thread you like and look at the "similar threads" feature provided. There's usually more information there.
You will find that most here will refer you to rick - he is a supplier that provides a wealth of knowledge as well as tools. He has a package for beginners and is available for information by phone if you have anything specific. He is a very good carver and seems to really enjoy helping others. I recommend him as a resource. (Rick, let us know when you too many folks calling on you!!!!)
More tips: Find someone near you that carves and spend time with them. Join a club nearby if you can - or at least try to visit one. Go to a show.
Good luck and remember - Safety first (wear a glove!) |

| | Re: beginner plans Hi, and welcome. I too am a beginner to the hobby and to this site. I purchased a beginners book a few months ago that I found to be very good. "First Projects for Woodcarvers", by Larry Green & Mike Altman published by Schiffer. It has three projects, a boot, a Scotty dog, and a small Nativity (no face detail). It has good step-by-step detail lots of pix. I completed the first two projects and was very satisfied, good luck and keep sharp. |
