Default Banjo Player seeks help gluing wood to heel to extend length

I have a banjo neck and the heel I need to add a piece of wood to lengthen it to fit a new rim. I need to add 1/2 inch in height. The piece will be 2 /12 long and 1 inch wide. Probably maple. I will sand the bottom of the current heel and then cut and shape this new piece of wood. The glue I use needs to have a high adhesive structure because I will be inserting a lag bolt into this lower 1/2 piece of wood to join the neck to the rim. Therefore the joint between the two pieces of wood (existing heel and extension piece) can never separate. After they are joined, I will shape and sand the 1/2 inch addition, stain and finish it.

Any suggestions on type of glue?

Hi Judy, welcome. Why not try posting your glueing question in this forum Wood Carving Tips and Techniques - Woodcarving Illustrated Message Board There might be someone with some knowledge about specific types of glue. Another thought would be www.grizzly.com as they sell guitar, violin, mandolin parts and kits. They might just have a recommended glue. Just a thought

might be useful , Elmers has a reasonably new glue , called ultimate glue , I haven't found a stronger bond for wood yet , its called Ultimate Glue and is a polyuerathane ,watereproof glue , it requires one or both peices to be slightly damp as this is required for setting , otherwize i would suggest that its hard to beat good old yellow carpenters glue , perfect fit and adequate clamping a must. good luck , Matt

Best to talk to instrument makers and repairers. Do a search on the web for such. A recent article in another woodworking magazine I read was on a test of glues. Titebond (PVA) glues gave the strongest joints and the new polyurethane glues gave the weakest joints.
