Default Another Noob Saying howdy from the Northwest.

Howdy, I of course have a long list of noob questions, need to know the where, what, and who's of woodcarving. But I'll save them till after I search.

I had a couple semesters of woodcarving and sculpture back in College (Think 90s) in Colorado. Been away for a long time, though I've always been meaning to get back to it. I love the feel of the wood, the warmth, and the beauty. I've been gimping along with a couple of cheap palm gouges I picked up somewhere along the way, but now I want to get more serious.

I'm mostly interested in sculpture, abstract form, shape, and motion. We'll see though.

Starting the hunt for a proper workbench and proper tools. I was thinking about Flexcut but there seems to be some disagreement as to their quality and function.

Anyhoo, before I get into 20 questions I'm going to head off with the search function and see what I can find.

Glad to find a useful and active carving forum.

.

Rev

Hi Rev, and welcome you'll find this web site newbie friendly, heck even oldbie friendly too. Lot's of knowledge and good friendship on these boards.
Hope you find what you are looking for, there is a forum on tools you might take a lookey.

Lots of "Noobs" here over the last few days... Good sign.

Thanks for the welcome, I look forward to seeing whats out there and getting set up myself. I've got several half carved blocks of this or that sitting in boxes...

Time to get going.

Welcome Revlis. Regardless of what style you end up using choose your tools based on comfort. I've purchased several different brands of knife and I find some of the handle shapes hard on my hands. Try to buy your tools only where you can pick them up and handle them. It'll go along way to making the carving easier.

Yeah, I'm certain you are right about handling the tools to figure out what's going to work for me. I was of course hoping for an easy "Buy these palm tools because they are the best" sort of solution.

I shouldn't complain I suppose, There is a Woodcraft store here in Seattle so I suppose I can just take a trip and check out most of what I'm looking for first hand.

Thanks for the welcome...
