| | Re: Another newbie here Wow! What a wonderful welcome! Thank you all so much! And thank you for your kind words. This seems like a wonderful community. I'm sure I will learn much here and I will beware of any twig carvers.
I am so miffed ... my flex shaft broke today and I just can't use the 400 the same way. I sent an email to Dremel to see what they say. I haven't even had it a month yet. I'm going to lose my mind until it's replaced. I did at least get two more forks cut out before it went kaput.
The hair forks are wonderful for longhairs and I am one. I make hair sticks, too. Here's a finny one I made out of a wooden spoon. lol I haven't finished it yet because I can't decide on a color. |

| | Re: Another newbie here Thank you for the condolences on my flex shaft. Yes, it is truly broken, the inner coil? is snapped about two inches up from where it connects to the Dremel itself. No doubt about it. I felt it snap when it cut into that hard piece of wood. But my hands can sure use the break. They've been swelling and hurting a lot since I started this.
It's really great to see other longhairs here! Mine comes down to my thighs and I usually wear it down, but it's getting rather warm and I thought these hair toys would be a great way to learn carving and be useful in the bargain. I've looked at them on eBay and refuse to pay those prices, especially after I see how easy they are to make! And I haven't even started on using the more awesome woods that are out there. I can't wait!
Can anyone tell me a decent place to buy wood from? (Is that allowed here?) I think the only place I've looked is at Rockler. I use 1/4" x 3" (or 5") x whatever length I can get. I've been going to Home Depot for the poplar I'm using now, but I really want to try some of the exotics.
lol @ my spoon stick. I was desperate for wood and looking around, all I could find was a wooden spoon I never use. That was my first 'real' carving of any kind. Those spoons make for excellent hair sticks because the tops are so perfect for carving shapes into and they are sooo cheap. Wish I could find some made out of other types of wood.
I got the hippie icon somewhere on the net .. I can never remember. I collect them. I've got a whole folder full of cool little smilies like that. You use it just like any other attachment, it's just a lot smaller. |

| | Re: Another newbie here Well, here's a shot of what pieces I've done so far and an "action shot" of the whale tail fork. I still have a lot to learn, especially about finishing my pieces. I use watercolors for staining and Krylon Clear Coat as the finishing gloss.
I realize that what I do is completely different from what most of you do, (I had never thought about that before I joined, and I'm glad I didn't because I probably wouldn't have had the nerve to join) but after looking around at what y'all are doing here, you've got me wanting to try my hand at actual carving. I can't imagine I could have any talent there because I can't even draw a decent circle. It may take me a little time to work up my nerve, but I can see it coming. And I see that as a good thing. Thank you all for having me here and being such an inspiration to a beginner. |

| | Re: Another newbie here Twig, I think you have done a remarkable job on those hair forks (I guess that's what you call them) being a 77 year old male, that's really not my thing but you really have done them well. I'm sure some of our female members will pick up on those and be inspired by your work. Welcome to the forum, you'll meet a lot of GREAT people on here and good luck with your future carvings.

| | Re: Another newbie here Thank you so much, Tucker! You've given me a smile for the day!! I've never worked with wood except a little pyrography off and on over the years. And since discovering I can actually make something nice with it, I'm addicted! I have wanted a hair fork collection for a long time, but refuse to pay $30-$40 for one fork. I never dreamed I would be able to make them on my own. At the rate I'm going, I'm going to run out of places to keep them if I keep at it. But I think they will make wonderful gifts. |
