Thanks for the "Welcome" ya'll.I've been browsing the posts having fun (got to see some great carvings and even a Razorback bird bath ).The videos are going to be a great help (I'm going to order some bass wood Monday) to me when I take my first stab at it.

Hello and welcome, Jerry C. It's nice to have you here with us. You might want to consider stickmaking for the Boy Scouts.

Thanks for the input Ron (LOVE your sticks btw) but I did this with them this spring.Last summer a storm blew over some black walnut and hickory tree's at a friends house.I saved a bunch of limbs and let the boys take their pick. They used their pocket knives to de-bark them and a wood burner to decorate. Then we put a small eye bolt in the bottom end, hung them in my garage and they put poly on them (what a MESS ((LOL)).

I started making hiking sticks about two years ago for my family and enjoyed doing it (thats why I had the foresight to save those tree limbs).I did not realize that ya'll had a section on here about sticks until I came over here for carving.Yea, I'm not the brightest apple on the tree.

My thinking is to let the boys start out with bass wood blocks and carve an animal.Something simple that will give them confidence to keep carving. Then, move into trying "wood spirits".After that,I will let them pick out another stick (gotta get some more cut soon) to make.

If you or anyone else has suggestions or ideas as to the best way I can learn/teach this I would REALLY apprecciate it (post or PM welcome).I'm really kinda flying by the seat of my britches on this.

I must say "Thanks" to Shannon for encouraging me to come over from the Scroll Saw forum and give ya'll a look. She is sending me the next issue and has given me some more suggestions for learning.

Thanks again, Jerry C
