| | I am the new "OLD" kid on the block. If you noticed the Name YODA, well that is about how this old man looks and feels......
I thought I would give this hobby a try, before I get covered up with dirt!!!!!
I am going to be asking for a great deal of assistance, my experience is somewhere between carving toothpicks and slivers.
I am really hoping that I would be able to carve "one" of those wood spirits, before the man comes to get me.
I have an abundent supply of bandaid's and I hope you members are tolerant of an old man who dreams.
Oh, I would appreciate some suggestions on a starter set of wood carving edges.
Thank you all before hand

| | Re: I am the new "OLD" kid on the block. Yesh, I don't know John. Just checked your profile and wow you are old. Certinally not many years left to learn. Who are you kiddin? Just like a law enforcement officer; stretchin the numbers. When I go 65 and get pulled over the officer will probably say I was pushin 75. Just kiddin John. I am a few years older than you and have only been carving a little over two years. But I am glad you found this forum. There's carvers here that are considerably older and younger. Some with lots of experience and some with not so much. But one thing they all have is the willingness to answer questions, point you in the right direction, and give you encouragement. Wood Spirits are a good place to start out. As to tools, I started out with only a knife. I'll let others more experienced than me give some direction into the tools to get. But I am glad you'r here. | | Re: I am the new "OLD" kid on the block. I'm not going to get too elaborate on age. You're as young as you feel. Cut fingers hurt young fellas too. When I started carving, I did not have fancy chisels and gouges made in Switzarland. all I had was my Dad's Jackknife. the advise my Grandpa and Mentor gave me was "picture the end result and carve away everything that doesn't look like it." or something like that. Keep a sharp blade and keep your fingers out of the way. Welcome to the Forum. Hope to see your work. Have fun.

| | Re: I am the new "OLD" kid on the block. "In one lifetime, a man knows many pleasures: a mother's smile in waking hours; a young woman's intimate touch; the laughter of grandchildren; and the feel of a knife as it passes through wood in the twilight years. To deny these in ourselves is to deny that which makes us one with nature...Only acknowledge them, and satifaction will follow." - Master Kan
Sorry, I added in the part about the knife... couldn't help myself!
Welcome aboard YODA and may the force be with you!
