Default wormy basswood

Has anyone ever come across wormy basswood. I got some from a guy a couple of years ago. It is great for giving carvings an antique look. I did some shore birds and santa's with it. The guy who had it said he thought it was a type of bee or wasp larvae that had gotten into it. I live in south central Pennsylvania. I did contact Heineckewood. Dale said it is not common for basswood to get wormy. If anyone has any or knows where to get some I would appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. Thanks

Not sure if you are interested in Butternut like that. I do come across it at the sawmill.

Maybe in Dale's neck of the woods the wormy stuff isn't common, but here in western Upper Michigan it's more common than the non-wormy stuff. At least in the areas I seem to look.

Geeze, you mean you actually WANT it wormy??? I just baked a santa in the microwave to get rid of the worms and make sure they didn't come back...patched the holes and was good to go. I got some from a friend in Maine...most of it is beautiful but one piece was just as wormy as heck.

I knew a guy that was into building new "antique" furniture. He used junk wood to create some "new" authenticity...got hold of some wormy oak and was really proud of his creation, only the doors were made from the wormy wood, rest of the little cabinet looked a little funny with no holes...SSsoooo
he borrowed a mutual friend's sawed off double barrel shotgun (many many moons ago, was illegal then, just not as illegal as today) loaded it with some #12 bird shot, backed up from his pride and joy, gripped the gun with both hands, pulled both triggers...and promptly blew the back off of it and destroyed the doors....he was supposed to be standing much further away...MUCH FURTHER...
He wanted LOTS of "worm holes"...

ROTF....OMG!
I have heard that they do the same thing to the designer, stressed look denims....maybe bird shot would have been a better choice....chuckle..oops, just re read that last post....I skimmed it the first time and was thinking "buckshot"...sorry.

Bird shot did that???? Well, that is good to know. I have a little semi automatic 22 cal. that is typical of small guns...you couldn't hit the side of a barn from 10 feet away with it. An old retired cop told me to keep bird shot in it. He said it turns the little gun into a mini shotgun and you might not kill your attacker but you would certainly blind him and have a chance to get a way. That is the weapon I keep handy in my carving studio, starting a few years ago when we had a "crack house" accross the road from us. The Crack house is gone now but I still keep the gun handy out there. It's good to know how well the bird shot will work.....
