Default Wood Trade Works for Me

Just started a new job trimming out a multi-million dollar house. The "super" is also a woodworker/luthier and does a little carving also. I brought him some large chunks of Mtn Laurel, a piece of Madrone and Nutmeg that I had received from Keoma and in return, He brought me a nice piece of Mahogany about 7"x24"x5/4 and 2 pieces of Koa 8"x36"x3/8" and 5/8". Think I did pretty good on that trade, eh? I wasn't expecting it and now I have to figure out what to do with the Koa. It's too highly figured to make boxes out of although they would make nice tops or panels on a small cabinet.

Mike,
what is Koa? Never heard of it? Is it a tropical import like purple heart or cocobolo? (sp?) Is it a native of the west coast area? Oops, I see you are not in California like Keoma is.... I was just assuming that since you got wood from her you must be out there also.

Koa is from Hawaii. I used to live in California...a long time ago. My friend brought me some more wood today, a piece of Quilted Cherry, a large piece of Vermillion Oak Veneer. He said it's from S. America. He also brought me two more pieces of Koa bookmatched veneer. He also gave me an old Miller Falls two speed breast drill with builtin level and the vial still has the liquid in it.

My friend did it again. He brought me two more large pieces of Mahogany, a piece of White Mahogany, and a big chunk of vertical grain/ QS Redwood. In exchange I gave him a large piece of clear Chestnut that came from the historic High Hampton Inn. (I think he's cleaning out his shop, but I don't mind )

I've never worked with Koa, but do know it's used alot as an exotic wood in guitar-building. beautiful color and features. Might be neat to carve. Let us know how it turns out!

My thinking is the Koa has too much figure for carving. Plus all the grain changes would make it a bear to carve. I figure I'll use it for box tops or maybe some floating panels in a cabinet door. I haven't tried to carve it yet so I could be all wet.
