While visiting Bandon, OR. I stopped by American Western Exotic Hardwoods and purchased some nice pieces of spalted maple. They do not have a website but do sell on ebay. He has a good supply of wood and I will share the contact info with anyone interested if you pm me. I have been reading on this site about spalted maple and will definitely wear a face mask. Being way new at carving, is there anything I need to pay special attention to with this wood? I am SO excited to get started! |

Oscar, that is a good suggestion, I'll have to remember that next time I visit Bandon. We go every year. While hubby is out fishing I could be getting a truck load of driftwood! I don't know about the shop ran by some young boys, the place I went was a husband wife team located about 6 miles south of Bandon. |

There's no need to wear a dust mask if you're carving the spalted maple with edge tools. The chips aren't a problem. But if you're raising dust, be it with a saw, power carver, or sanding, then definitely wear a mask.

Thank you Jim. I thought I read the "spalting" was caused by a fungus and probably misunderstood it becoming airborn with edge tools.

Thanks for the link, Dave. I love carving Port Orford and will give you a holler next time I'm looking for some. See you in Lincoln City, perhaps? S~ p.s. You may want to run spellcheck on 'regonial' (first pic) ;-)
