Default wood pocket knife

wood pocket knife Hey,
I'm looking for the instructions for making a wood pocket knife. Anyone know of a source? I used to have a kit for making the knife. But now I only have some of the wood left, but no instructions.

In E. J. Tangerman's "Whittling and Woodcarving", there's a chapter on "Joints-Hinge and Pivot". On page 104 there's a photo of a 2 blade folding knife that's carved from a single straight grain piece of wood. No specific directions on how to do a knife, but generalized instructions on carving the joints in different applications--scissors, plierts, knife, straight razors, etc. If you search on the Internet, you can usually find a used copy of the book for a few dollars. Or you can check at the library, and see if they have it. Tangerman has a couple of books, so you might able to get more info. from another book.

Here's a link to a photo of wooden folding knives--pretty neat!

Gee, maybe I got this all wrong.

I thought Sogone89 was looking to carve a carving knife--made completely out of wood--including the blades. That's what I was referring to with Tangerman and the website link I put up. I also know I've seen a large folding knife--as in something someone would create for a sign, or a wall plaque. I think it was in one of my signmaking books. I'll have to look.

I was not sure, but I thought I would throw out another bit of info as well. They were fun to look at even if thats not what he wanted to make

As Just Carving mentioned, Tangerman has them in a couple of his books, but not very detailed. A good explaination with large diagrams is in "Whittline Simplified: Everything You Need to Know" by Herb Reinecke. He has instructions for a single blade and a two blade version. I believe the copy I have came from Little Shavers.

The design and instructions I have used is from a book titled "Wood Carving and Whittling" that my uncle gave me in 1947. The technique is pretty straight-forward. Here is a photo of a couple of recent knives I've whittled:

Carved from single pieces of basswood, but I replace the pivot with 1/8" dowel for more strength. I finished these by carving a "bone texture" in the grip portion of the knives.

Here is one I made for my Grandson. It's a copy of a lockback that I have. He is too young to have a regular knife and so far he is OK with this one. It has been through the wash and such but seems to hold up.
If you want I'll look around to see if I still have the plans I drew up.
