Default wood for hair sticks?

I wanted to make a friend some hair sticks, but didn't know what kind of wood would hold up to the abuse. I have a LOT of Mahogany and Walnut scraps. Would they work? What else?

Is there some kind of finish that would make them stronger?
Thanks!

Either will work fine. I have used walnut, butternut, basswood (when painted), tigereye maple, and spalted dogwood.

The butternut and bass were a bit light feeling.

All were finished with a couple of coats of polyurethane finish.

Reg Hard Maple Will Work Just Fine . You Can See It Better Than Walnut If You Dont Have Maple Use The Mahogany Just My Two Cents.

Hair sticks are those chop stick looking things women use to hold certain hairdos in place.

The two woods you have will work fine. I have also used birch, red alder, and butternut. (Have to use the cut offs from my sticks for something )

Sand them smooth and then use oil or a damp rag to raise any grain and sand again. I finish mine with mineral oil.

Hello! I can tell you for certain! Hair Stix and combs are my thing! You can use any kind of hardwood. 6 1/2 inches is about average.
ONE WORD OF ADVICE
This is very important.
The most important actually
What color is her hair?
That will tell you what kind of wood to use.
My hair is brown/auburn. I wear Black hair combs, or Maple with Red Accents.
My Blondie friends are lucky...all wood looks good!
My Black Haired Mother, well she gets Maple and Yew.
Make sure you post pictures when you are done!
