Howdy folks, I picked up some redwood burls to play with and finally figured out how to use some of it (the grain was going the wrong way for most of my projects). But the edges are covered in a thick wax – I think to help keep it fresh. What are the best methods for removing it without dulling knives or ruining sanding bricks? |

Just carve it off...it will not hurt the knives. It has to be gone for sanding though. I picked up several blocks of Big Leaf Maple burl totally covered in wax...carved off just fine. Last edited by schwert; 07-21-2011 at 09:36 PM. |

Howie, Whatever you do, don't put your sandpaper/bricks on the wax. It will load it up and be a real pain to remove. However edged tools as Schwert proposes are fine. Even a saw, as the wax will just serve as a lubricant. Just reserve your abrasives f0or the bare wood. L.P.

Cabinet scrapers or carpenters chisels would work as well.
