Default vines

I was walking the dog yesterday and came across a wild grape vines .pretty thick you couldn't get your hand around it probably about 6inches around. I took out my pocket knife and cleaned off some of the stringy bark until I got to solid brownish color area and then made an "s" shape and carved a sliver out .under the brownish area was a light color and seemed to carve fairly easy.

was thinking about cutting a couple of pieces to try, one I would try green and the other I will wax the ends and let cure a while.

any one have any experience or advice or opinions ?love to hear them.

Also I would like to know if it will kill the vine ?Don't think it would be responsible to indiscriminatly cut and harvest .

they are on my property and some of them can be taken without much problem. like killing the whole stand of vines I hope.

Grape vine dries really fast and usually splits badly, but is still strong enough for a walking cane or staff after splitting. If you don't peel it til it's dry, and seal the ends well, it may not crack. You can prune grapes really hard and they'll come back strong and healthy, maybe even produce a super crop afterwards.
Good luck!

Not really sure what muskedine is .

these are in p.a. and you could cut them and swing on them like tarzan, and some years they get small purple fruit on them about half the size of normal grapes.

I'll try to look them up in my tree book or google it and see if I can identify them for sure.

Hi Michael,
Those grow wild here in NC.There's also some that look like them there called scupernine. Not sure if it's spelled right though. There is a scupernine out on the coast that was documented by the pilgrams. They guess somewhere around 400yrs. old.
