Smile What type of wood?

What is "Kingwood". I live in Ottawa, Ontario. Canada, and have never heard of it.

I was looking at a stylized hummingbird in The Art of Stylized Woodcarving and the picture said it was carved from Kingwood.

I have lots of lcoal access to basswood, walnut, cherry, butternut. Which might be closest to Kingwood?

Thanks for any help.

I did a web search for kingwood and found that it is a south american tree. It has hard fine textured,purplish-brown wood used for making cabinets. There is alot of kingwood veener on ebay for sale. It's a beautiful wood. It might be worth try a sample peice.
