are we talking real spools? From thread? Neat! I find mine at junk shops, bargain barns and antique stores. Always cheap. Can't wait to see what you carve on them!

most of the spools that your wife or mother had are hard rock maple and nearly impossible to carve onto. however the tall ones used in the mills are softer. several sizes of basswood spools are available. good luck!
I am looking for thread spools that have been turned out of basswood just for woodcarving. I buy the old thread spools from ebay and have been given quite a few. The old ones are made from hard wood and are difficult to carve on, though I will continue to do so. I carve quite a few every year - mainly snowmen and Santas. Thanks for any info!
I can always find them at Beverly's craft stores and Michaels Craft stores as well. Maybe you could find a lathe worker to turn you out a couple? Good Luck!

smokey mountain wood carvers.com. they have bass wood spools for carving pretty cheap, and they are a very secure site. mac and the gang are really nice too boot.
