Default Thread Spools

Has anyone ever carved Sewing Thread Spools?
When I was in Arizona, I picked up some at an antique store.
I carved faces on them and they turn out pretty well.

They are much easier to carve in basswood. You can get them from Smokey Mountain Woodcarvers at http://www.woodcarvers.com/turnings.htm. I just turn my own on a mini lathe nowdays.

Carving,
Don

I know you can buy basswood spools, but I didn't see any on that site. Â*Besides I already bought 243 vintage spools, so I am committed; or should be.

243 spools? That should keep you busy for a day or two.

Millhoused,

You mentioned a mini lathe. Do you mind posting what kind , how big and where you got it from.
Thanks,
Ken,

Sure,

Mine is a little different than this one (they must have discontinued mine). I have bought several tools from them and am satisfied (they fit my price range). I have also purchased a foredom clone and it works will also.

Carving,
Don
