Default TAGUA NUTS

I picked up some tagua nuts this weekend in the sierras. I am wondering what tools are best for carving them. Power or knives?

also, is 3$ a high or low price? Â*:-/

Ben,
The kind of tool depends on what you are going to make. Power works but be sure to wear a mask. They are hard little boogers to carve; you can saw them, too.

I do remember that they carve better if you soak them in water for a couple of days to soften them a bit. It's been several years since I tried them, but the finished carving looks like ivory. A few years back, Chip Chats had an article about carving Tagua nuts, but I don't remember what year or issue. Perhaps someone with a better memory will help.

Thanks. I will try soaking them and see what that gets.

If anyone is interested in where I got them reply and I will post directions. It will help a lot if you are in california.
