Default A Spalted Birch Project

Every piece of wood doesn't have to be carved.....here's a large piece of white birch I had to remove due to it's being almost dead. Turned out to be some nice spalting inside, but was a mite too punky to turn or carve, so I soaked it well with a sanding sealer, and then finished with about 6 coats of Marine Spar Varnish. The lamp is a small insert from WoodTurners Supply. The oposite end is drilled with six holes for votive candels so it can be used either way. the lamp just slips out of the hole.

I always like to see projects like this where something useful has been made from an otherwise wasted material. It's sort of that same feeling I got as a kid from my first savings account and was earning interest by doing nothing more than just letting it sit in somebody's bank... like getting something for nuthin'... and that's a good feeling!

Nice going there and nice lamp indeed!

Looks great, the little woman is always telling me, why don't you burn up some of this wood you've got laying around here. Showed her your candle holder now she sings a different tune. Harold

Looks great. Now you are all set if the power goes out this winter.
