| | Sources for large blocks of wood I'm looking for any sources of block wood in larger dimension - but not basswood. I'm looking for something with a pretty grain to it, maybe butternut (although that's hard to find these days), cherry, walnut, cedar, actually - almost anything except basswood or tupelo. I'd like to find someone who carries blocks 6" x 6" x 8" or larger. Do any of you have a source??? Thanks for your help. |

| | Re: Sources for large blocks of wood Hi,
If you'll call tree services in your area you'll be able to get any kind of wood they cut down, and usually very cheap.
There is a good wood supplier in TN called Full Cycle. They sell kiln dried wood on ebay and outright. Feel free to tell them Wade in Florida said you should get in touch with them...I've bought from them several times and always been pleased. They supply Dollywood with carving wood too, I believe. Good Folks! Do a search on ebay under sellers for fullcycle.
Good luck!

| | Re: Sources for large blocks of wood Thanks Wade - I stopped by there and they were great, unfortunately, they didn't have anything right then, but I did tell them you said hello. I have found a few pieces on ebay, in fact, I just received a beautiful piece of large cedar in the mail over the weekend.

| | Re: Sources for large blocks of wood Do you live close to Huntsville Al? I have a few monster pieces of cherry. They'd have to be picked up as they weigh in the 100lbs + range. |

| | Re: Sources for large blocks of wood No - I'm afraid that would be quite a drive at this time, but if I get down that way, I'll let you know. Thank you very much for the offer!

| | Re: Sources for large blocks of wood No problem at all. I have a few decent sized pieces of walnut as well as some osage orange. I have some smaller box elder burl pieces at 3.5" x 3.5" x 6". If you're ever in town, give me a yell and you are welcome to peruse my wood stock. |

| | Re: Sources for large blocks of wood Bigmama,
Hi again! Another source that might help, local sawmills.
There is an Amish sawmill near me that cuts railroad ties out of every kind of tree in the area. They're about 6x8 or a bit larger. Each one gets milled too long, then they cut off blocks from the end to get the right length. They sell the ends by the trailerload for $20 or so for firewood. One of the guys told me he could identify virtually every species looking at the wood.
If you want to bring a pick-up or trailer to the Lawrenceburg area I'd introduce you to them.
