| | Source For Pine Knots? does anyone have a source for pine knots? maybe you live somewhere where you actually collect these, and are willing to sell me some? i just carved one i bought at a carving show, i really enjoyed the challenge. i used hand tools, no power, i think it came out well. i would like to try a few more. i would be willing to trade some cottowood bark for some. i have some missouri eastern cottonwood bark, it is anywhere from 2-3 inches thick, it carves good. thank you!!! |

| | Re: Source For Pine Knots? I have a great source. A friend of mine has several acres covering the side of a mountain. Unfortunately they are covered by a few feet of snow. And to boot, his property is on the north side of the mountain. I am not likely to find any for a couple of months. If you want to give me a shout (reminder) in the Spring it would be my pleasure to round up a bunch for you.

| | Re: Source For Pine Knots? if you are still wanting it, I can start gathering up all that I find. Might even start this evening! The wife is in Columbia working but will be home this evening, hopefully before dark. I'm not allowed to walk alone because of my disabilities. I fall down alot and lose my balance, even with my cane, so walking alone could be very harmful to my health, not to mention how mad she would get if she found out I tried.
We live in SC and have 32 acres, mostly woods, and we are connected to 248 acres of, wait for it...... PINE FOREST! If you're still interested, just pm or write here... I don't know how much there is, and there might be more than I can even get back to the house, but I know there is at least 10-15 pieces that I myself have seen laying on the ground. sometimes I stop by them and break off a piece just because I love the smell of it... some of these pieces are pretty big though... how close are you to SC? Eh, lemme see what I can find first. |

| | Re: Source For Pine Knots? Agreed! Thanks takeaction. I've always wanted to try a woodspirit in a pine knot. Just a small one would be way cool if you find anything appropriate and easy to ship to NY state. Let me know and I'll PM you my addy. Let me know how you want to be reimbursed for shipping. Assuming you're willing that is. & thanks!

| | Re: Source For Pine Knots? shipping will be easy. we have plenty boxes. I just hope I can find pine knots... I went out with my son today to walk the goats, but we don't cover near the whole land, and all I found was a skinny 2.5' long piece, BUT I found LOTS of old cedar knots... figures... Karen won't be home until way after dark, so it will be tomorrow before I can get out again. Can go farther with her. Some of the cedar knots look really cool too.
Here's the cedar piece I found... http://www.smithfarming.com/cedarknot1.jpg
The pine piece I found is too skinny to do anything with unless maybe you wanted to carve a teeny tiny... well to be honest I can't think of anything that small... but it's really long... LOL!
Maybe better luck tomorrow |

| | Re: Source For Pine Knots? Karen and I went out this morning, found 5 more cedar knots...
Then we came upon a large pine knot that was still partly in the ground. I walked over and tried to pull it out by hand, couldn't do it, so I kicked it to break it out... BAD IDEA!!!
It came loose, but just as it did, out comes a hive of yellowjackets... Karen got one sting, and since I can't run, got eight stings before getting out of the area...
I'll go back this evening or tomorrow morning to get the piece. Gotta let them calm down. But this time I'm going prepared for war.

| | Re: Source For Pine Knots? Ouch!!! Well certainly don't go getting hurt in your quest for knots. I'm alergic to bee stings, so stories like this make me cringe. Bee careful out there. ;-) | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
