I was surprised to find a wide selection of very nice 1"x various width aspen at the Menard's store in Marquette. Pretty pricy, though. If you have a Menatf's check there, Maybe a Home Depot or Lowes.

I have some aspen in my shop. It measures 3 foot by 2.5" thick and is 8" wide. Would that be enough for your project?

Mark-

That would be more than enough. How white is it, and what would it cost to ship it to me in zip 95540?
Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck, I will post some pictures tomorow of the aspen, give me an idea what size you need and I will get you a price. If you want the piece I mentioned the cost would be $35.00 plus the shipping cost which I could get for you Tuesday mornring. I will post a picture on the forum of the piece I have before cutting tomorrow. Just let me know what way you want to go, Mark

What size do you need ? Check out http://www.hearnehardwoods.com/ For Holly, but many times it's easier to find clear German Hop Hornbeam. American Holly tends to have alot of knots, and may come out ivory grey when finished.

If you intend on keeping it white I'd suggest a water based polyester finish or Clear Walnut Oil, but the latter takes quite awhile to cure to full hardness. Maple sapwood with a water based poly will actually come out pretty light. It tends to yellow more with oil finishes.

Aspen can appear to green up like poplar with time.

Expect to pay 28.00 to 33.00 a bdft. for nice clear English Holly, but it works beautifully !

I have been cutting walking sticks that are like poplar, but didn`t know what type of tree it is. they are nice and straight, good to work with. Turns out they are Aspen, looked up Aspen on the google search after reading this topic. thanks
