Default Pine for working spoons?

In doing a search on the web, I discovered Pine & Fir was sometimes used for working spoons. This was new to me since I had always thought the pine pitch or sap was undesireable? The Wife has been after me to make some spoons and spatulas for kitchen use and there is a lot of 3/4" pine scrap in the shop. Anyone used pine for working spoons?

well yeah...I use it all the time. it works great. The sap makes no difference. Make pasta sauce one time with and the smell is gone anyway. It's not harmful, and the amount you'd get from your spoon would be nill anyway. carve away! Just make sure you post what you make! We wanna see!

Personally, I wouldn't use pine or fir because of the pitch content. I've made a lot of spoons for cooking (see web site) and have used maple, oak, walnut, olive, purpleheart, cherry and maybe one or two others. For looks, I think you can't beat the maple or the olive. The walnut I used was from some trees the local homeowner's association was cutting down. Let it sit out in back for a couple years to dry (after coating the ends with paint), split it and then made spoons.
