Re: Pine for working spoons? Personally, I wouldn't use pine or fir because of the pitch content. I've made a lot of spoons for cooking (see web site) and have used maple, oak, walnut, olive, purpleheart, cherry and maybe one or two others. For looks, I think you can't beat the maple or the olive. The walnut I used was from some trees the local homeowner's association was cutting down. Let it sit out in back for a couple years to dry (after coating the ends with paint), split it and then made spoons.
