Default Pear Tree Wood

I'm thinking about cutting down a pear tree and was wondering if anyone knows if that is a good carving wood. If I use it how long should I let it dry before carving on it?

Thanks
Steve

Pear wood is "the" perfect wood for ship modeling. Modelers the world over value it for it's ability to retain detail and the beautiful consistant colour and dense grain. Over years the wood gains a "pantia" or natural finish that just gets more and more beautiful. Clear oil and or wax is all that is required to finish it.

As for seasoning, it is like most other woods, a year an inch is normal. Stack criss cross for ventlation and make sure you coat the ends of the logs or boards with wax or seal with paint or watered down glue, to insure they don't check too much.

If that is too much work ..... send me the tree, and I'll dispose of it for you!!!!! Really, don't waste the wood, it is great for all sorts of carving, hard wood, but well worth the effort. Most fruit woods are great like that, but Pear is prized above all!

Bob

Pear is one of the harder of the fruit woods but, as Bob said, holds details very well and finishes beautifully.
